The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.

Scope of the Position:

This is a unique opportunity for a mechanical/manufacturing engineer in advanced optical materials and products. The position requires a self-motivated individual with precision machining experience to oversee and assist in the development and manufacture of low volume, high precision glass optics.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide process engineering support for mirror manufacturing operations for the purpose of improving both existing and developing processes
  • Project lead for various mirror projects
  • Provide mirror department process leadership focused on process understanding, process improvement, new technology and/or new product lines
  • Provide process documentation and operating instructions
  • Develop best practices, routines, and innovative solutions to improve processes and quality of output and reduce risk
  • Assess processes, take measurements, and interpret data
  • Develop and support standard operating procedures, documentation, and audits for manufacturing operations processes that will comply with ISO-based practices
  • Develop Experimental Plans/Reports as required to support process improvement and product development
  • Troubleshoot quality issues to determine root cause and implement solutions
  • Engineering lead supporting quotes of mirror programs to customers
  • Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work environment

Travel Requirements:  We anticipate less than 10% travel for this role

Hours of Work/Work Schedule: Standard Day Shift Hours: Mon – Fri (7 am – 3:30 pm with some flexibility)

Job Requirements

Required Education & Experience:

  • BS Degree or higher in Ceramic, Glass or Material Engineering
  • 3 – 10 years of engineering experience

Required Qualifications:

  • Excellent technical skills
  • Knowledge of process related standards
  • Analytical thinker with interpersonal skills
  • Strong hands-on design and machining skills
  • Strong computer skills; knowledge of SolidWorks and CAD skills
  • A teamwork mindset – ability to work/interact with a variety of personnel and backgrounds
  • Good judgment – ability to prioritize properly, work independently and efficiently, and to multitask in a fast-paced team environment
  • Thoroughness in executing assigned tasks; attention to detail and willingness to learn
  • Excellent observation and data recording skills with understanding of equipment, testing, and experimental procedures
  • Professional work ethic
