Job Description

Empire State Mines is currently seeking a professional to fill the role of Metallurgist at its underground Zinc operation. Located within 2-hour drive of The Thousand Islands, Lake Ontario shoreline, the Adirondack Mountains and world class skiing at Lake Placid. Explore Canada with Montreal and Ottawa only 2-3 hours away.

Responsibilities:

Reporting to the VP of Operations, the Metallurgist will be a pivotal team member responsible for:

  • Manages quality assurance/quality control for the assay lab and mill operations;
  • Monitors the process in the mill to maintain or increase production;
  • Oversees mill maintenance planning;
  • Identify and troubleshoot issues in the production process;
  • Provide technical assistance to operators, millwrights, and lab technicians;
  • Runs tests on new ore bodies and chemicals to get optimal recoveries;
  • Maintains assay lab chemical inventory;
  • Design and supervise plant sampling surveys, including proper sampling as required by the particular attributes of the unit operation being studied. Analyze the data extracted and make recommendations for change based on interpretation of the results using sound engineering principles;
  • Metallurgical accounting and control of inventories (solutions, carbons, ponds, tanks, pad, etc.);
  • Maintain current knowledge of industry practice and innovation and technological change;
  • Budget planning for production and chemical capital purchasing;
  • Manages the mill operator, millwright lead, and other mill personnel as needed;
  • Compliance with all company policies and procedures including, but not limited to safety, environmental, confidentiality and code of conduct;
  • Consistently exercises discretion and judgment in job performance;
  • Works without risk or harm to self and others;
  • Punctuality and regular attendance required; (12 hour days/ 7 days per week is what we are used to😊
  • Helps develop other department personnel to perform duties listed above;
  • ICP, XRF, AA, fire assay, titrations, mill surveys, chemical addition, and flows.
  • Ensure all employees and contractors are working in a safe manner in line with mine site standard operating procedures and MSHA safety guidelines;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in chemical or metallurgical engineering is preferred;
  • At least 5 years’ experience required;
  • Possesses good communication and interpersonal skills;
  • General understanding of mining operations, as well a vast understanding of milling, heap leach and maintenance operations.
  • Working knowledge and skill with P.C. utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, databases, and presentation software.
  • Knowledge in processing modelling software is preferred.
  • Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
  • Ability to work independently and also as a member of the management team.
  • Demonstrates strong administrative, organizational and technical writing skills.
  • Presently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

Requires valid driver’s license.
